INSTANT MESSAGING
November 2011

With consumers constantly bombarded with information, it can often be difficult to grab their attention. The innovative new Digimark™ surface graphics imaging system from Ennis Prismo Traffic Safety Solutions offers a novel, simple to install and cost effective way to get your message across.
Digimark™ is a self-adhesive, digitally-imaged display sheet, which enables the ground beneath our feet to be used as a space for branding, advertising, decoration, or simply to provide information.
Designed for temporary or permanent placement on hard surface areas, Digimark™ enables full colour graphics to be applied to practically all vehicular and pedestrian ground surfaces. Since virtually any high resolution graphic or image can be reproduced, Digimark™ is suitable for a wide range of applications from advertising and decoration, to playground markings and floor plans or maps.
The DigimarkTM system is incredibly easy to use and provides an instant, high quality, visually-impacting area. It can be applied or removed in minutes on any area that is dry, free from debris and in good repair. Contractors simply prime the application area with a suitable primer, remove the backing tape from the product, then layout the graphic and apply pressure to adhere. Removal is achieved by simply warming the product with a gas torch or steam hose. The image can then be lifted, leaving no residue on the road surface.
Digimark™ features a polyurethane top coat which is fully transparent and highly durable. This provides a protective finish that does not impact on the visual quality of the image beneath. A recycled glass cullet , containing anti-slip particles ensures a safe, skid and slip-resistant finish. While sufficiently durable to resist degradation or deterioration when exposed to ambient weather conditions, Digimark's™ surface structure ensures that graffiti can easily be removed.
The system bonds to the road surface via a natural bitumen with excellent adhesive qualities. A layer of specially developed high strength fabric, is placed between the printed ink graphic and the adhesive, binding the two together. This fibre reinforcement controls the flexural rigidity and the extent of bond strength development to ensure ease of removal at the end of use.

Ennis Prismo Lines Up New Markings
September 2011

Two new road marking products, one to form temporary markings and another to create more permanent lines, have been introduced by road safety products manufacturer, Ennis Prismo Traffic Safety Solutions.
The two products, to be known as 'Easymark Permanent' and 'Easymark Temporary' will further extend the company's range of line marking solutions. These fast drying aerosols are ideal for use in car parks, warehouses and on roads, playgrounds and sports grounds. Non harmful to the environment and aquatic life, Easymark can be used on a range of surfaces including asphalt, concrete, metal, timber and grass.
The new competitively priced line markings have been specifically designed to cater for longer term, or short term performance, whichever best fits the user's requirements.
Easymark Permanent, will produce distinctive lines which are expected to last between six and twelve months, depending upon the extent of trafficking. Clean, accurate lines can be achieved with the two, or four wheel applicators. The marker is resistant to most chemicals and is chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) free.
Easymark Temporary on the other hand, is formulated specifically for creating short-term low cost markings that will fade after a period of approximately six weeks, again depending upon trafficking. It is ideal for creating provisional markings in areas where low wear applications are required or where markings are required to fade or disappear shortly after work has been completed, thus eliminating the need for mechanical removal. If required, markings can be removed instantly with a pressure hose and brush.
Available in 6 bright colours; white, yellow, blue, red, green and black, each 750ml aerosol has sufficient capacity to form a 100 metre long line at a width of 50mm. Both can be applied by applicator or hand and in conjunction with stencil kits, can also be used to form letters and numbers.
To launch the new Easymark Permanent product, Ennis Prismo is offering 1 free box with every 5 boxes bought for a limited time only.

Enhanced Safety at TT2
July 2011
The recently completed Tyne Tunnel (TT2) project, which links the A19 trunk road and the historic towns of Wallsend and Jarrow, incorporates a major contribution from road safety products manufacturer, Ennis Prismo Traffic Safety Solutions.
The opening of the 2km long TT2 tunnel, which includes a 1.6km underground/water stretch, has allowed traffic using the original tunnel to be transferred to the new subterranean route whilst refurbishment works are carried out on TT1. It is believed that once these are complete, TT1 and TT2 will function as separate routes – one northbound and the other southbound.
Ennis Prismo supplied traffic safety materials for the entire length of the new road surfacing.
Line markings around the toll booths and on the roads leading into the tunnel were established with 'Rainline', a specialist profiled road line marking with the ability to maximise wet-night visibility. The thermoplastic material was extrusion-applied and embossed to create a continuous pattern of inverted profiles on the road surface, in order to enhance driver awareness.
Inside the tunnel, the double solid centre line and both edge lines were formed with 'Vibraline', an award-winning profiled thermoplastic raised rib road marking designed to provide drivers with a visual, sensory and audible warning of encroachment.
'Stimsonite 980' road studs were employed throughout the project. The studs are manufactured from tough, injection-moulded, high impact resisting polymers and incorporate the most advanced air gap prismatic lens technology. The surface mounted 'stick on' system has remarkable retained retro-reflectivity and excellent location retention. They provide 409mcd/sqm/lux of retained retro-reflectivity after one year - well over that required by BSEN1463 R1, which demands a minimum of 150 mcd/sqm/lux for such surface applied markers.
The Tyne Tunnel complex also includes a third subway, solely for the use of pedestrians and cyclists, which links up with the Coast to Coast Cycle Route.

Tyregrip Makes Swedish Debut
July 2011

The first ever application of Ennis Prismo's high friction surfacing product 'Tyregrip' in Sweden has been installed in an effort to protect the general public at an accident black-spot in the City of Västerås - located about 100 kilometres from Stockholm.
Tyregrip was specified to form an anti-skid approach to a pedestrian crossing in order to reduce the braking distance of oncoming vehicles and bicycles.
The speed of traffic in this location had been a particular problem and 300 square metres of Tyregrip, incorporating light and dark bauxite, was applied.
The high friction, anti-skid surfacing, manufactured by UK road safety products manufacturer, Ennis Prismo Traffic Safety Solutions, is ideal for such applications and diverse climatic conditions. The cold-applied, two- component epoxy material is used with 1-3mm bauxite aggregate to form an exceptionally durable high friction surfacing.
In addition to pedestrian crossings the system, which is road tested and certified to BBA HAPAS TYPE 1, is specifically intended to create safe surfacing and approaches on and to traffic lights, road junctions, bridges, roundabouts, sharp bends and other hazardous locations.
The work at Västerås was carried out by Swedish contractor, EKC Sverige AB, for the local authority, Västerås Community. Ake Algotsson, Managing Director of EKC Sverige AB, commented "Since its installation, Tyregrip has made this section of road much safer and Västerås Community intends to continuously monitor the results of the exercise. We also found the material easy to apply and reasonably priced".

A Road Marking Revolution!
April 2011

Ask any highway engineer about the problems of using temporary road marking products for road works or other temporary route delineation. Chances are that top of his/her list would be the lengthy and complex installation, causing disruption and/or costly road closures, poor levels of durability and a difficult removal process often causing damage to the road surface.
Current temporary solutions also have associated problems such as a lengthy drying/curing process, a need for very high installation temperatures which pose a danger to operatives and a requirement for large machinery.
Yet temporary road markings are an integral part of ensuring that traffic on the UK's roads continues to flow as smoothly as possible.
Now Ennis Prismo Traffic Safety Solutions has come up with the answer; a new and unique system that resolves all the previously predictable problems. The internationally established road safety products manufacturer has introduced the first (and only) pre-formed, cold applied road paint, marketed under the Paintmark™ (patents pending) brand.
Paintmark™ is incredibly simple to use and is set to revolutionise the temporary road markings market. It is quick and easy to apply by hand thus minimising costly road closures, it can be trafficked immediately and its removal (causing no damage to the road surface) is virtually effortless. Due to the innovative manner in which the new temporary marking is manufactured, it can be produced in a wide selection of shapes, lines, colours and designs, including symbols and company logos.
Paintmark™, which is workable even at low temperatures, comprises three core components. The trafficked surface is Ennis Prismo's 'High Build' durable waterborne traffic paint, into which high index glass beads can be incorporated to provide appropriate levels of retro-reflectivity, if required. The system bonds to the road surface via a natural bitumen with excellent adhesive qualities. Between the paint and the adhesive is a layer of specially developed high strength fabric, which binds the two together.
Eventual removal is achieved by simply warming the product with a gas torch or steam hose. The need for hydroblasting, scabbling, or the use of a heat lance, is completely eliminated, and no residue is left on the road surface.

Ennis Prismo Divests Contracting Division
April 2011
UK based road safety products manufacturer, Ennis Prismo Traffic Safety Solutions, has sold its UK contracting subsidiary, Prismo Contracting Services, to DBi Services of Hazleton, Pennsylvania.
"We've thought about divesting our contracting division, in order to concentrate on our core road safety product manufacturing business for quite some time", explained Keith Dawson, Managing Director of Ennis Prismo.
"As a manufacturer operating on a global basis with our parent company Ennis Traffic, the UK division was the only part of our business that operated a separate contracting division. This decision therefore aligns our business across the globe, allowing a more focused strategy for our international operations. It is also a very positive step for the Prismo Contracting Services group and DBi.
Ennis Prismo will continue to concentrate on its core safety solutions products in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The acquisition provides DBi with an excellent opportunity to expand their international operations".

Ennis Prismo Continues To Spread Its Wings
January 2011

Having recently set up a new joint-venture arrangement with Ulukar AS, one of Turkey’s leading highway contracting companies, UK based road safety products manufacturer, Ennis Prismo Traffic Safety Solutions, is currently supplying significant quantities of its Sprayplastic 131 UF for application on two major projects in the region.
The two projects, tendered by the TCK (Turkish Directorate of Highways) for the Ankara Region (4th Area) and the Izmir region (2nd Area) involve an application area of 270,500 square metres.
Sprayplastic, a high-performance, reflectorised, spray applied thermoplastic road marking containing high quality glass beads, is designed to provide effective road marking in varied climatic conditions. It is available in cold climate, semi-tropical and tropical grades, as well as in special ‘thin overspray’ grades for the rejuvenation of existing lines. The product is fast setting and as such, facilitates speedy and hence, economic output. Sprayplastic also complies with BSEN and EN1436 and meets ASTM, EN, BSEN, etc, standards.
The work in the Izmir region, which was tendered at the end of 2009, has recently been completed. The project in the Ankara region is expected to conclude at end of 2010. Both contracts are proving that Sprayplastic 131 UF is providing the most cost-effective solution for Turkish Highways.
The new joint-venture arrangement follows many successful installations of Ennis Prismo products in Turkey over the past two years and is expected to further strengthen the UK based company’s presence in the Turkish Thermoplastic Roadmarkings market.
Both parties believe that Ennis Prismo’s technical background, combined with the local knowledge and expertise of Ulukar AS, will prove extremely successful over the coming years.

'Perfecto' ~ Ennis Prismo Italia!
November 2010
2011 witnessed the setting up of a new joint venture between UK road safety products manufacturer Ennis Prismo Traffic Safety Solutions and two Italian partners.

The new Italian partners began marketing and distributing the Ennis Prismo range manufactured at its Chorley factory.
The joint venture initially secured orders from major third party contractors, which significantly strengthened the business at the early stages of its development.
Currently, the joint venture is proving very successful in winning major road marking contracts throughout the north and central areas of Italy, and it has overcome the difficulties associated with the differing market needs.
Significant differences exist between UK and Italian product requirements due to factors such as climate and product application techniques. Ennis Prismo has therefore re-developed its thermoplastic spray-applied products in order to meet specific contract demands. As a result, by the beginning of June the company found itself developing and designing various new grades of thermoplastics with the ability to spray equally well at higher thicknesses and faster speeds, through the different types of installation machines currently employed in Italy.
Materials needed to be suitable for large spraying equipment, with 4-tonne capacity boilers and application speeds of 10 to 14 K/Hr; almost twice that of the UK. Specifications also demanded varying application spread rates dependent upon the contract requirements. Separate contracts also had difference performance levels, which are mainly achieved by the application thickness. In addition, some contracts have to be marked every 6 months and others every 12 months.
As a result, successful applications of Sprayplastic 100 have been completed on the A21 near Cremona and the Autostrade near Asciana/Florence in Tuscany, whilst applications of Ultraline 133VA thin have been carried out on the A6 south of Turin.

'Suregrip' Ensures Sure Grip!
October 2010
When it comes to public safety there is little room for compromise. When safety applies to an area in regular and constant use, such as Rhyl bus station in North Wales, there is no room for compromise.
This was precisely the reason why ‘Suregrip 924’, manufactured by UK road safety products manufacturer, Ennis Prismo Traffic Safety Solutions, was chosen to provide anti-skid surfacing at the busy public transportation depot.
Suregrip 924 proved the ideal surfacing for the project. The cold applied, two-component, bitumen extended epoxy material cures to give a high performance, high friction surfacing.
It is certified to Highways Authorities Product Approval Scheme (HAPAS) Type 1 for precisely such an environment. The surface treatment is specifically designed for use in highly trafficked areas like bus depots, accident black-spots, such as approaches to pedestrian crossings, traffic lights, junctions, bridges, roundabouts, sharp bends and other hazardous locations.
At Rhyl Bus Station, Suregrip 924 together with red granite was used to create safe anti-skid surfacing on the public walkways, whilst Suregrip 924 with 1mm to3mm buff and grey Chinese bauxite was installed to provide reliable traction for the vehicles. In order to minimise staining from future oil deposits, bus standing areas were treated with grey bauxite.
Before application could begin, a subcontract road sweeper and cleaning agents were employed to remove the significant amounts of oil staining caused as a result of years of use by the buses. In addition, since it was essential for the station to remain open at all times, all works were carried out during night time periods, with only half of the station shutting down at any one time.

Ennis Prismo Nominated for Excellence Award
October 2010
We are proud to announce that Ennis Prismo has been nominated in the 2010 Highways Magazine Excellence Awards. We have been nominated in the category ‘Road Marking Product/Project of the Year’ for the work carried out earlier this year between J25-28 on the M1 with our innovative Rainline™ product.
Manufactured in the UK, Rainline™ is a true innovation and has an inverted profile coupled with a high density of accurately placed, different sized, recycled glass beads. Water drains away from the sides of the line exposing the beads and increasing the retro-reflectivity in wet or damp conditions.
Application by Ennis Prismo experts using a highly accurate machine process ensures short application times, minimal product wastage and consistently high product performance.
Measurements of retro-reflectivity from the laid lines on the M1 show Rainline™ surpassed the European standard requirements by an average of 160% in dry conditions (R2), 172% in the wet (RW3).
Ultimately Rainline™ improves road safety through significantly better visibility in critical weather conditions.

Top Performance at Secret Facility
August 2010
More than 2,000 square metres of Stonegrip decorative surfacing, manufactured by road safety products manufacturer Ennis Prismo Traffic Safety Solutions and installed by specialist applicator, North Wales based Coatech Ltd in January 2007, remains as good as new, according to reports issued after a recent survey.
The aesthetically pleasing, low maintenance, non-slip and durable surfacing was applied nearly four years ago to footpaths adjacent to new futuristic offices and helicopter facilities built for the Search and Rescue services based at RAF Valley, the covert military installation located in Anglesea, North Wales.
Stonegrip was preferred to the tarmac surface and applied over it in order to enhance its appearance and blend better with the local environment. “It is unfortunate”, commented a spokesman for the RAF, “that the surfacing is located in a secret location and cannot be viewed by more people. It still looks as good as new nearly four years down the line”.
Stonegrip provides a uniform, weed-free, gravel surface finish without the associated problem of loose chippings. It comprises an epoxy resin binder into which aggregate is bound. The epoxy resin ensures a permanent bond to the substrate and can be pigmented to complement the selected decorative aggregate dressing. Likewise, the aggregates are available in a variety of bespoke pigmented colours and textures of stone, spar, granite, marble, bauxite and gravel.
Stonegrip is the ideal material for footpaths, bridle-paths, driveways, pedestrian precincts, heritage and conservation areas, landscaping schemes and car parks.

New Crack Sealant Receives
BBA HAPAS Approval
July 2010
Road safety products manufacturer and contractor, Ennis Prismo Traffic Safety Solutions, has announced that its new Fibrescreed RC100MTR crack repair product, has successfully passed the technical assessment for crack repair systems for highways under the BBA HAPAS scheme.
The product received its approval certificate in September 2010. This means that Fibrescreed RC100MTR is now approved for use on all major asphaltic trunk roads and motorways in the UK.
Whilst the approval is for recessed crack repair, Ennis Prismo manufactures a range of Fibrescreed products that can be used for practically all types of crack repair, including 'Kerb Sealing', 'Infill', 'Saw Cut & Seal/Crack Inducer' and 'S.A.M.I.'.
Fibrescreed RC100MTR provides a number of significant benefits to both contractors and road users alike. It helps to reduce costs by extending the life of existing highways without the need for resurfacing. It is fast and easy to apply, meaning that costly traffic disruption is kept to a minimum, thus further reducing costs and disruption to road users. The product is extremely durable and gives a lasting, long-term repair. It has excellent adhesion properties, so will not de-bond from surfaces.

When used in a recessed repair, it enables a controlled depth of material to be applied, ensuring a smooth and level finished surface giving excellent ride quality for road users. The product can also be surface dressed to give good skid resistance; making it safe for two, four and multi-wheeled traffic. Finally, its flexible and waterproof properties helps in preventing further surface deterioration.
Ennis Prismo's Technical Manager, Richard Hughes said 'This approval demonstrates the excellent results that we have achieved from the new crack repair product. Approval for RC100MTR to be used on such heavily trafficked areas is proof of its excellent long-term performance'.

Road Problems Devoured Roundabout Cucumber
June 2010
Motorists heading toward Norfolk’s Great Yarmouth coastline will appreciate the ease with which they reached their destination, thanks to extensive highway reinstatement works carried out by road safety products manufacturer and contractor, Ennis Prismo Traffic Safety Solutions.
A number of Ennis Prismo materials/products were installed to help improve more than 11 kilometres of road surface on the A47 between the Cucumber Roundabout and Acle Roundabout (5.6 km in both directions) making transit to the town and sea front far less arduous than was previously the case.
This particular stretch of the A47 is the primary entrance and exit for thousands of holiday-makers, other visitors and locals and, in order to achieve the client’s targets of reducing traffic disruption over the peak holiday season, Ennis Prismo were required to complete the works over a tight four-night period during the week immediately prior to a busy bank holiday week-end.
Reinstatement work included the installation of new line marking, which was accomplished using ‘Lifeline’, a reflectorised thermoplastic material designed especially for major highway applications and ‘Vibraline’, a profiled thermoplastic road marking designed to provide drivers with a visual, sensory and audible warning should they stray on to the edge of the carriageway.
New high friction, anti-skid and coloured demarcation surfacing was also applied and was followed by the installation of more than 1,200 new re-rubberised cats-eyes.

Rainline on the M1
May 2010

The M1 is the UK’s main motorway, leading up the middle of the country. It is now 51 years since the road was constructed and it is currently undergoing some major upgrades. This work includes the widening and relaying of the busiest parts of the route, including a 17km section of both carriageways between J25-28. It is on this section that Ennis Prismo’s increased wet/night visibility road marking product; Rainline, has been applied.
Historically it has been rare for high performance road markings to be applied on UK motorways. We are therefore pleased that the safety benefits of Rainline have lead to it being specified for this project.
One of the main reasons for the relaying of the road surface was to increase safety on this
section of road and ensure that its wet/night retro-reflectivity met the EN1436 class RW3 (50mcd/sqm/lux). Due to its profiled surface and glass beads, we have consistently achieved results of 150mcd/sqm/lux from the Rainline laid! In addition to the Rainline, Ennis Prismo’s audible warning system - Vibraline, and Stimsonite 980 road studs were also used on the project.

Star Studded Performance!
April 2010
Following its introduction in 2008 the new approved ‘Stimsonite Model 980’ road stud, marketed by Ennis Prismo Traffic Safety Solutions, has been adopted by numerous highway engineers as their road stud of choice.
Over the past 18 months the stud has been installed on highways in Durham, Redcar and Cleveland, the A1 and A1M, the A66 Scotch Corner to Kirby Stephen, all motorways between central Nottingham and Grantham, motorways in the North West and the Midlands, the M180, M18, M62, the M25 and the new A27 Devils Dyke scheme, to name but a few. In early 2009, a substantial number of the studs were also laid as part of the widening scheme on the M1 (between junctions 6 and 10) with proven excellent retention.
In original BSI road trials, Stimsonite Model 980 exhibited a remarkable retained retro-reflectivity and 100% location retention over a one-year period, which was significantly higher than that normally anticipated, or generally demanded for such road safety devices. It exhibited 409 mcd/lux of retained retro-reflectivity after one year; more than twice that required by BSEN1463 R1, which demands a minimum of150 mcd/lux for such surface applied markers.
Stimsonite Model 980 is supplied as a stick-on system. It incorporates a specifically designed polymer-modified bitumen adhesive proven to perform above minimum requirements of BSEN1463 S1. The adhesive is supplied in three grades; tropical, semi tropical and standard, to suit all climatic conditions. The stud complies fully with BSEN 1463, parts 1 and 2, is manufactured to ASTM D4280 and is approved for use by the UK Highway Authorities. It is manufactured from extremely tough, injection-moulded, high impact resisting polymers and incorporates the most advanced air gap prismatic lens technology, protected by a highly abrasion resistant glass face. Its 17cm reflective area includes a 35° reflecting face that will continue functioning even if subject to damage.
Ennis Prismo also reports that the ‘inset’ version, the Stimsonite Model C80/381, has also been successfully employed in Durham, Redcar and Cleveland and has just been introduced on motorways the North West and the Midlands. The C80/381 combines the durability of the injection moulded Model 80 series with a proven long life abrasion resistant coating. The lens is set into an iron casting to protect it from snowplough operations and to ensure a positive interlock with the road. The result is a road stud that offers excellent adhesion, durability and retained reflectivity. The C80/381 is CE certified to meet EU Standard EN-1463:1997 for quality (Rated R1 for Reflectivity and S1 for Retention).

High Friction Surfacing in Southern Ireland
February 2010
The most recent trial approved by the The National Roads Authority of Ireland (NRA) was on a very busy main road near Dublin which had seen 21 fatalities over the last 3 years. A significant contributing factor was a steep downhill section of Asphalt road approaching a junction where, particularly in wet conditions and heavy traffic, vehicles were unable to stop quickly enough.
Tyregrip was specified and, to allow for the incline and prevent loss of Epoxy on such a steep slope, cellulose fibres were also recommended and added to the Epoxy mix.
This worked well and in very difficult traffic management conditions the 2000m2 downhill to the junction was completed over a two-day period in September and the NRA has already suggested that if it proves a success Tyregrip will be specified for the entire region.
