In 2007 the roads and bridges authorities in Holland the ‘Rijkswaterstaat’ launched a competition to design innovative types of bridge expansion joints with the essential requirements of being durable and noiseless under the action of traffic.

The winners of the design competition then received sponsorship from the Rijkswaterstaat to install their new product in selected bridge sites in Holland and produce test pieces for an extensive programme of evaluation of performance

Noise from traffic is an increasingly important issue to Dutch road and bridge engineers and they are keen to introduce systems that can reduce the impact of noise on the environment. Prismo was invited to take part in this competition and submitted an entry based on a modified version of the ThormaJoint asphaltic plug bridge expansion joint system.

Ennis Prismo’s experience with plug joint systems enable the design of a noiseless bridge expansion joint. There were over 30 entries to this competition and of these, only four “winners” were announced and Ennis Prismo entry was picked as one of the four “winners”.

Ennis Prismo successfully completed the installation of the new ThormaJoint over the two weekends of 25, 26th April and 2nd, 3rd May 2

The road authorities in Holland have set up special equipment to monitor performance of the joints but already the benefits of these systems are being enjoyed by the local residents.

While Ennis Prismo was still on site a local resident came out to visit us and mentioned that the traffic noise from the old joints meant he had always to sleep with his bedroom window shut – but now with the ‘quiet joints’ he was looking forward to his first night sleeping with the window open!
