Introduction to Rippleprint
Noise optimised traffic calming surface
Solution
Most major traffic calming surfaces create noise and inconvenience for speeding drivers – but also for anyone in the immediate vicinity. Developed by Prismo, in conjunction with the Transport Research Laboratory, Rippleprint is a safer and quieter traffic calming system (compared to speed bumps.) It warns drivers of approaching road hazards, but remains virtually silent to the surrounding environment.
How it works.
Traditionally traffic calming surfaces such as rumble bars and strips create a wide range of frequencies which cause a significant level of exterior noise disturbance. Rippleprint is a sinusoidal profiled surface with wavelengths (peaks and troughs) designed to generate low frequency vibration through the suspension of a vehicle to the drivers’ cabin, while outside the vehicle the vibrations create little exterior noise. The sound contained within the vehicle generates up to 12dB (decibels) over standard road surface, but externally, up to only 1dB from 30 metres away. Rippleprint is designed to be level with the original road surface providing less visual disruption than traditional speed humps. In addition, it provides a smooth transition onto a surface with no vertical faces, to ensure that safety and performance is not compromised. The difference in height between the peaks and troughs on the surface is only 6-7mm.
Rippleprint Features
The increase in internal noise and vibration within an average size car, is equivalent to 15mm rumble strips
- The surface is approved for use by emergency response vehicles
- Can include edge strips that are “bicycle friendly”, minimising discomfort for cyclists
Advantages
- Alerts drivers to approaching hazards
- Traffic calming is safe with reduced “annoyance factor”
- Drastic reduction in wear and tear on vehicle components with repeated use, when compared with traditional speed bumps
- Rural and urban applications
- Little or no increase in road noise to immediate vicinity
- Can be laid direct onto existing surfaces, no need to dig up perfectly usable roads
- Available in a variety of colours
- Suitable for all vehicle types and safe for all road users
- Tested by the emergency services
- Long term life expectancy
- Quick to install
- Falls within legislation for rumble devices, no special dispensation required
- Incorporates bicycle friendly edge strip to minimise discomfort to cyclists
